The introduction of nesting boxes to the Kennett River wetlands…

Late last year, we partnered with the Colac Otway Shire to improve the ecological function of the wetlands through the installation of high-quality nesting boxes, designed and built locally by the Apollo Bay Men’s Shed.

The boxes were selected in a range of sizes to accommodate different native species, including rosellas, kookaburras, microbats, and the powerful owl to name a few. Concurrently, the immediate surrounds of selected trees, along with the broader fenced reserve, were treated for invasive weeds as part of Council’s ongoing environmental weed management program—reducing competition, improving native vegetation recruitment, and strengthening overall habitat quality.

Nesting boxes are most effective when installed well in advance of the breeding season, allowing fauna time to detect, investigate, and habituate to these structures. With this in mind, four boxes have been installed within the fenced wetland reserve.

While kookaburras and powerful owls usually prefer natural tree hollows, these nesting boxes can provide supplementary nesting or roosting opportunities, particularly in landscapes where suitable hollows may be scarce.

Should you observe any wildlife interactions with the boxes… entry and exit behaviour, vocal activity, or other signs of occupancy, the environment team at the Colac Otway Shire Council would love to hear from you.
